Introduction


This project presents a comprehensive analysis and visualization of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games using Tableau. By leveraging data from various sources, this project aims to provide insightful visualizations that highlight key aspects of the Games. These include medal tallies, athlete performances and country rankings. Through interactive dashboards, users can explore how different countries and athletes performed, compare historical data, and gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the 2024 Olympics.



Objective


The objective of this project is to utilize Tableau to create dynamic and interactive visualizations that analyze various aspects of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. This includes examining medal distributions, athlete by country and country rankings, and event-specific trends to provide a conclusion and comprehensive insights and facilitate a deeper understanding of the Games.


Data Information


The data was collected from Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games (kaggle.com).


The tables used for this visualization were Athletes, Medalists, Medals, and Paris 2024. We utilized Microsoft Excel for data cleaning and established Tableau relationships to connect the tables, enabling the creation of these visualizations.



  1. MEDAL BY COUNTRY



 

The visualization above demonstrates how different values were selected and assigned to columns and rows to create the chart.




This chart allows for a quick comparison of how different countries perform in terms of medal counts, which can be useful for understanding global sports dynamics. A closer view of the chart shows the country positions by medals won; these are the top 5 countries:


  1. USA: 40 Gold medals, 44 Silver medals, and 42 Bronze medals, totaling 126.

  2. China: 40 Gold medals, 27 Silver medals, and 42 Bronze medals, totaling 109.

  3. Japan: 20 Gold medals, 12 Silver medals, and 13 Bronze medals, totaling 45.

  4. Australia: 18 Gold medals, 19 Silver medals, and 16 Bronze medals, totaling 53.

  5. France: 16 Gold medals, 26 Silver medals, and 22 Bronze medals, totaling 64.


Key Insight: China and USA have the highest medal count, also leading in gold medal, indicating strong performances in top-tier events. Japan shows a balanced distribution of medals across all types. Australia has a notable number of medals, with a relatively balanced distribution among gold, silver, and bronze.

Silver and Bronze Medals: The distribution of silver and bronze medals is more varied, with countries like Japan and Australia showing strong performances.

The visualization above shows different values were selected and assigned to columns and rows to create the chart.




The chart shows the number of gold medals won by each country across different disciplines. The USA leads with the highest number of gold medals, with athletics contributing 14. China follows with 40 gold medals, excelling in diving with 8. Japan ranks third with 20 gold medals, with wrestling total 0f 8. The graphic also provides a visual representation of the distribution of medals among the participating countries, making it easy to compare their performances. This detailed breakdown helps in understanding which countries excel in specific sports and events and offers insights into the overall competitive landscape of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.



  1. TOTAL MEDALS WON BY TYPE




To upload the shapes, I downloaded the images and uploaded them to ‘My Tableau Repository,’ then ‘Shapes.’ After that, I could use them in Tableau, which helped create a better and more visually appealing visualization.












The visualization clearly shows the number of medals won: 328 gold, 330 silver, and 383 bronze. This breakdown provides a comprehensive view of the medal distribution, highlighting the achievements of the participating countries in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.


  1. TOTAL ATHELETES BY GENDER



Through this visualization, using downloaded interactive shapes to upload to the Tableau Repository, we show the total number of athletes: 11,110, with 5,455 females and 5,655 males. The number of males athletes slightly exceeds the number of females by 110. The distribution is relatively balanced, indicating a near-equal representation of females and males.



  1. ATHLETES BY BIRTH YEAR AND GENDER





The visualization of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics shows athletes born between 1954 and 2012. The data indicates a significant increase in the number of athletes starting from those born in 1980. The peak years are as follows:


  • 1996: 831 athletes (412 females, 419 males)

  • 1997: 883 athletes (422 females, 461 males)

  • 1998: 864 athletes (419 females, 446 males)

  • 1999: 900 athletes (443 females, 457 males)

  • 2000: 908 athletes (463 females, 445 males)

After 2000, there is a noticeable decline:

  • 2001: 815 athletes (372 females, 443 males)

  • 2002: 698 athletes (315 females, 383 males)

  • 2003: 531 athletes (264 females, 267 males)


The number of athletes continues to decrease in subsequent years until 2012.

Here are the five top countries with the highest number of Athletes for the Paris Olympic Summer games 2024:


  1. The United States of America has the highest number of athletes, with 291 males and 328 females.
  2. France follows with 305 males and 295 females.

  3. Australia has 210 males and 265 females.

  4. Germany has 232 males and 225 females.

  5. Japan has 230 males and 201 females.

                                                       

The chart provides insights into how different countries are promoting sports among both genders. Countries with balanced bars are likely investing in gender-inclusive sports programs. Countries like the United States and France show a balanced representation of male and female athletes, indicating efforts towards gender equality in sports.

The graph includes data for multiple countries, with the United States, France, Australia, Germany, and Japan being prominent:


  • United States: The longest bars, indicating the highest number of athletes, are seen in disciplines like Athletics and Swimming.

  • France: Also has a significant number of athletes, particularly in disciplines like Athletics and Swimming.

  • Australia, Germany, and Japan: These countries have fewer athletes compared to the United States and France, but still show strong participation in various disciplines.

  • Gold Medals: Females have a slight edge over males, with 296 gold medals compared to 284 for males.

  • Silver Medals: The numbers are very close, with females at 290 and males at 285.

  • Bronze Medals: There is a more noticeable difference, with females earning 296 bronze medals compared to 232 for males.


The relatively balanced distribution of medals between genders suggests that both male and female athletes are achieving success across various sports.
